This is what Cameron Schwab wrote about his art at the time:

My drawing of @freodockers Captain @alexpearce25 the moment after he kicked the goal that put his team within a point against @collingwood_fc on Friday night in @optusstadium in Perth. Only a few minutes earlier, they were twenty-five points down.

After kicking the goal, just the fifth of his nine-year AFL career as one of the game’s best full-backs, he saluted, pointed and then thrust a fist to the sky.

His good mate, and former Docker teammate Cam McCarthy had died two weeks earlier, aged just 29.

Many of Cam’s former teammates, including Pearce, played out their loss to Sydney only hours after learning the devastating news.

Fremantle couldn’t quite get over the line against the Magpies, playing out a draw.

In his emotional post-match interview with @abbeycholmes from @channel7, he said:

“I was actually talking to (fellow defender) Lukey Ryan, I was like, ‘mate, my legs are cooked here. You might have to go forward instead of me’, and he was like, ‘Nah mate, you’re doing it’”.

“So I went. Glad I did.”

“It’s just something when the game’s on the line, we send one of our backs forward – what defenders out there don’t want to play forward every now and then.”

“It’s been tough. A couple of weeks ago, it was a really hard game to get through,” he said of his mate.

“Yeah, I was nervous going back when I had it.”

“My hands were a little bit shaky. I did think ‘Cam would kick this’, so yeah, I was happy. It was for him.”

“I’m just so proud of everyone, to be honest.”
